Bitcoin Competition Winner

We are proud to announce the winner of our Competition, hosted by Bitcoin Baba. Congratulations to Louise Hogarth on winning R 1,000 paid in Bitcoin. You can read her writing competition entry here

Here is an excerpt from her entry:

“How I would use Bitcoin to solve a typical South African problem? I plan to use Bitcoin to contribute to the movement to get rid of the banks in South Africa. In my experience South African banks are some of the biggest bloodsuckers on the planet. I am so tired of their exorbitant fees and poor service.

In 2007, I hired 40 woman crafters, to craft bracelets for the DO Ubuntu Orphan Bracelet Campaign, the campaign was inspired by my film Angels in the Dust.

Due to the danger involved in carrying large amounts of cash I decided to pay my crafters via the bank. I discovered the banks make it almost impossible, for a rural crafter, to open an account and the account fees are sky high.

Eventually I had to form the woman into legal cooperatives to open accounts at the bank. I formed the woman into groups of between six and ten in each co-op. I paid the woman via my bank, into their co-op accounts. This is the beginning of the crafters journey to receive their salaries.

Initially they have to catch a taxi to the nearest town which is time consuming and expensive, after collecting the cash, one or two woman bring the money back to the group, its dangerous to carry cash but there is no choice, it has to be divided between the members of the cooperative…”
